I guess you'd need to remove it from Scheduler.h as well. The little I know of this problem suggests this is a flaw in GCC. If somebody can convince me it's a FAM issue, then I will consider making appropriate changes (provided it doesn't break IRIX), otherwise it would be nice if somebody who knew more about this filed a bug against GCC. I'm seeking a way to make fam "forget" that it needs to monitor this disk. I'm running the fam that ships with RedHat 7.3 (fam-2.6.7-6); I have a 7.2 system that has been upgraded to 7.3. I have this service configured through xinetd. If I boot the machine, log in, and mount a particular vfat drive, I cannot unmount it (device busy, and something else about an illegal seek). Fuser identifies fam as the culprit, and sure enough a fam process is running. If I restart xinetd (using the init script in /etc/initd), the fam process is killed and does not restart and I can mount and unmount the drive at will. But the next time I boot the machine, I have this bad behavior again, unless I again restart xinetd. The problem arose from a complicated series of missteps on my part. It involved having the automounter autofs set up to mount the drive on the same mount point as if I issued a regular mount command. I did issue such a command and it looks like someone got confused and the disk looked like it was mounted twice in /etc/mtab. I deleted the extra lines from /etc/mtab and could unmount the drive, but now I have this problem with fam. I realize this is very sketchy and you may well need more specific info to help. I tried to keep the initial message short rather than fill it with irrelevancies. I'm new at this and still learning alot. I appreciate any suggestions I can get. I've tried reinstalling the fam and xinetd packages (as well as nautilus and kde2-compat that depend on fam). I am at a loss as to how fam is remembering to monitor the drive at boot and why it forgets to do so after restarting xinetd. I believe FAM actually opens a file on the file system it is asked to monitor when used with the DNotify patch, as used on a Red Hat Linux system. This is the way DNotify works. I think Nautilus and/or Konqueror (the GNOME and KDE file managers, two of the most common applications that use FAM) have been modified to explicity deregister any interests it has on a mount point before attempting to unmount it. So: 1) This happens when using FAM/DNotify 2) Try unmounting your mount using Nautilus There are probably better ways around this that we could discuss if this solution is not what you wanted. Actually there was a bug in nautilus that i only recently fixed that prohibits even unmounts from nautilus to work. Unfortunately the fix is for nautilus 2.0.x (gnome 2), so it won't work in redhat 7.3. Right now i see no better solution than killing nautilus. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Alexander Larsson Red Hat, Inc alexl@redhat.com alla@lysator.liu.se He's a leather-clad drug-addicted cyborg with acid for blood. I (and at least a few others) got the same problem with GCC 3.2. The workaround was simply to remove the const qualifier in question. It turns out that Gentoo also use this "fix", which is why the original poster wrote back later saying that, after upgrading his (Gentoo) system, FAM suddenly compiled okay! Anyway, I've no idea whether the real problem lies with the code or with GCC 3.x, but I just thought I'd mention the workaround in case anyone else has problems. First, am wondering if there is a dnotify patch for 2.6.9, or is it the case that one is not needed (i.e. patch is already done in the source)? Not knowing this, I went back a version took 2.6.8 and its patch; however, that patch seems to be for 2.6.7. With all that confusing me, I then fell back to 2.6.4, since that has been around awhile. I got the patch to take just fine, but now I seem to be having problems with the aclocal, autoconf, and autoheader actions that get run after configuration during make. So as not to repeat the problems here, they generally mirror the problems another gentleman was having near the end of June, though they are slightly different. I tried the suggestions given to him, but that just put me deeper in the mire. I have no clue how to fix these types of problems, since I am not an autoconf/m4 expert. I am using linux 2.4.19, gcc 2.95.3, libtool 1.4.2, automake 1.6.1, and glibc 2.2.5. Please let me know if I should send more detailed output. Also, please let me know if it is safe to go back to 2.6.9 and still get the dnotify functionality. But the problem is that I cant monitor more then 248 dirs using that script. On 249th it just hangs. I thought that bug can be in Fam Perl module, so I decided to use c++ program. I modified test.c++ file included in the FAM package. So now it has additional key '-l'.If use that key it'l take list of dirs to monitor from file dirlist.txt (attached). When I run that modified test.c++, I got more or less the same result (hangs after 256 dir)as using perl script. So I decided that Fam perl module is out of the problem. Than I started Fam with debug keys and tried perl script and then test.c++ again. The result was absolutely the same: Fam in it's messages said that it's monitoring needed dirs but only till request number 90. After that it stops showing any debug messages although perl script or test.c++ send to Fam more than 90 dirs to monitor. Tried on RH Linux 7.3(2.4.18) and Mandrake Linux 8.2 (2.4.18) Included files: fam_sync.pl - perl script to monitor lots of dirs test.c++ - modified to monitor lots of dirs dirlist.txt - my directory structure scandirs.pl - perl script to create dirlist.txt for any directory, usage: scandirs.pl yourdirname Take them here: ftp://cypress.ie.tusur.ru/incoming/4fam/dirlimit.zip -- Best regards, Stanislav mailto:1rsv@mail.ru From benasselstine@canada.com Mon Sep 30 16:14:38 2002 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list fam); Mon, 30 Sep 2002 16:14:39 -0700 (PDT) Received: from c009.snv.cp.net (h018.c009.snv.cp.net [209.228.34.131]) by oss.sgi.com (8.12.5/8.12.5) with SMTP id g8UNEctG011708 for ; Mon, 30 Sep 2002 16:14:38 -0700 Received: (cpmta 13259 invoked from network); 30 Sep 2002 16:14:37 -0700 Received: from 209.228.34.126 (HELO mail.canada.com.criticalpath.net) by smtp.canada.com (209.228.34.131) with SMTP; 30 Sep 2002 16:14:37 -0700 X-Sent: 30 Sep 2002 23:14:37 GMT Received: from [65.93.231.191] by mail.canada.com with HTTP; Mon, 30 Sep 2002 16:14:36 -0700 (PDT) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit MIME-Version: 1.0 To: fam@oss.sgi.com From: "Ben Asselstine" Subject: Announce: FAM client - fileshanged 0.5.0 X-Sent-From: benasselstine@canada.com Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 16:14:36 -0700 (PDT) X-Mailer: Web Mail 5.0.11-9 Message-Id: <20020930161437.25545.h013.c009.wm@mail.canada.com.criticalpath.net> X-archive-position: 16 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: fam-bounce@oss.sgi.com Errors-to: fam-bounce@oss.sgi.com X-original-sender: benjamindavidasselstine@hotmail.com Precedence: bulk X-list: fam Hello. fileschanged 0.5.0 is available on sourceforge. It's a command-line client to FAM -- you give it the filenames to monitor via stdin, and it tells you as they change via stdout. Intended use is for within sysadmin shell scripts. http://fileschanged.sourceforge.net/ Comments and suggestion would be much appreciated. thx.
