( it just > keeps getting worse doesn't it... ) patching source code is a trivial task (provided the patch is correct). some docs on using the 'patch' facility: http://www.openwall.com/linux/README (the installation instructions apply to any patch, but may differ for the directories in use) http://people.redhat.com/dledford/patching.html (basic patch instructions) the format is usually: patch < file.patch the -p argument (ie patch -p1) is used to strip directory names (ie with -p1 /usr/src/me becomes /usr/src). the installation instructions for the fam/imon patches should be helpful here. other SGI OSS projects have this info in their FAQs or install instructions. hope this helps. ____________________________ jose nazario jose@cwru.edu PGP: 89 B0 81 DA 5B FD 7E 00 99 C3 B2 CD 48 A0 07 80 PGP key ID 0xFD37F4E5 (pgp.mit.edu) -- Source code, list archive, and docs: http://oss.sgi.com/projects/fam/ To unsubscribe: echo unsubscribe fam | mail majordomo@oss.sgi.com From owner-fam@oss.sgi.com Wed May 23 17:12:27 2001 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by oss.sgi.com (8.11.3/8.11.3) id f4O0CRA28510 for fam-outgoing; Wed, 23 May 2001 17:12:27 -0700 Received: from arnie.adacel.com.au (arnie.adacel.com.au [203.36.26.147]) by oss.sgi.com (8.11.3/8.11.3) with SMTP id f4O0CAF28503 for ; Wed, 23 May 2001 17:12:10 -0700 Received: (qmail 21721 invoked from network); 24 May 2001 00:19:21 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO adacel.com) (192.168.75.7) by arnie.adacel.com.au with SMTP; 24 May 2001 00:19:21 -0000 Message-ID: <3B0C51DB.C2F2956E@adacel.com> Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 10:12:11 +1000 From: Michael Wardle Organization: Adacel Technologies Limited X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.76 [en] (WinNT; U) X-Accept-Language: en,en-US,en-GB,de,de-DE,de-AT,de-CH MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Andrew Clayton CC: fam@oss.sgi.com Subject: Re: [fam] Imon References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-fam@oss.sgi.com Precedence: bulk Andrew Clayton wrote: > I was wondering if imon is still being actively maintained. I have used the imon patch from to patch several Linux 2.2 kernels, and have not experienced any problems doing so. The latest imon patch for Linux 2.2 is imon-0.0.2-2.2.17. If you are not using this patch, try this first. If you can send me the patch command you are issuing, and the output produced, I will be in a better position to help. > Reading the FAQ, I see that you can use FAM without imon, how much a > performance hit would a dual cpu box looking at a couple thousand > files/dirs take?. (I don't yet have such a machine to test it on) I have not performed any testing of FAM without imon, but I suspect there would be a detrimental performance difference, altho the system should still perform better than if every application were polling the system manually, after all, that is one of FAM's goals! If you are using a Red Hat system, you should be able to install the FAM RPMs from the above mentioned site, and see how FAM performs without imon for yourself. (If not, the FAM source is there, too, altho you may be unable to build this without imon, unfortunately.) After checking out the latest XFS kernel from their CVS I changed tristate--->bool in the imon patch, added the line CONFIG_IMON=y into my old kernel-2.4.2-i686.config, loaded that config file using make xconfig... did make oldconfig to set the new values from 2.4.4 and then did the "usual" (I'm a kernel build newbie....:) ) make dep, make bzImage, make modules, make install_modules... set up lilo to boot the new image...AND everything SEEMS to boot GREAT ( You can imagine how excited I was having successfully compiled my first kernel... ;) ) after copying the imon.h into my /usr/include/linux/ I recompiled fam ( with the usual glitches of missing stdlib.h string.h... someone with CVS access should update that... ) ... fam starts... I run efsd (the E fs Deamon) and fam pukes about not being able to insmod imon.o!!!! HEY I THOUGH by changin tristate to bool and setting CONFIG_IMON=y in the old config it was supposed to compile it statically!! Any help will be MUCH appreciated... :) Oh yeah ... plus I don't think fam wants to play nice with xinitd in my original kernel... I've changed /etc/rpc and added the /etc/xinit.d/sgi_fam according to Malte's instructions... but when I start efsd, xinitd spawns fam and IT GOES BERSERK!! Eating up the cpu... I have to kill it and start fam manually before I can start efsd... :( Help the newb...
