The problem is specifically with XFree86. > Well, I next try to run an X-server on the second graphics card, using a > Virtual Terminal (the idea is that a keyboard and mouse should go with > the second screen). With devfs mounted and the default devfsd configuration, it should be a link to /dev/vc/8: $ ls -al /dev/tty8 lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 4 Nov 3 12:12 /dev/tty8 -> vc/8 Make sure that /dev/vc/8 exists and you have permissions to access it. You should run XFree86 as root. You can use strace to find out what XFree86 tries to do and why it fails. -- Regards, Pavel Roskin From proski@gnu.org Mon Nov 3 10:27:40 2003 Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list devfs); Mon, 03 Nov 2003 10:28:13 -0800 (PST) Received: from fencepost.gnu.org (fencepost.gnu.org [199.232.76.164]) by oss.sgi.com (8.12.10/8.12.10) with SMTP id hA3IRd25009280 for ; Mon, 3 Nov 2003 10:27:40 -0800 Received: from proski by fencepost.gnu.org with local (Exim 4.24) id 1AGjKZ-0000g6-Jz; Mon, 03 Nov 2003 13:21:35 -0500 Date: Mon, 3 Nov 2003 13:27:33 -0500 (EST) From: Pavel Roskin X-X-Sender: proski@marabou.research.att.com To: Ingo Brueckl cc: devfs@oss.sgi.com Subject: Re: devfs(d) problem In-Reply-To: <3f9d61c6@wupperonline.de> Message-ID: References: <3f9d61c6@wupperonline.de> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII X-archive-position: 165 X-ecartis-version: Ecartis v1.0.0 Sender: devfs-bounce@oss.sgi.com Errors-to: devfs-bounce@oss.sgi.com X-original-sender: proski@gnu.org Precedence: bulk X-list: devfs On Mon, 27 Oct 2003, Ingo Brueckl wrote: > Hope, this is the right place to ask. > > I'm using devfs with devfsd for some time now, no problems. The problem is > specifically with XFree86. Yeah, well, I figured it out eventually. It had to do with the backstreet ruby kernel as well. I have the habit of making sure everything works with one step before I move on to another, but this time, that strategy didn't serve me. Going further in the howto I needed to boot up with a dumbcon=2 parameter. When I did that, indeed, devfs made the needed devices. One things that is still unclear to me: Shouldn't devfs show up in mount's output? Thanks, this is what helped me to figure out what's going wrong. I was surprised, that modprobe could NOT load the ppp_generic module, thus indicating that my problem isn't a devfsd problem at all, but rather a problem with modprobe and module loading. After understanding this and playing around with /etc/modules.devfs, I found the line causing the trouble: alias /dev/*dsp* sound Because modprobe stops comparing when reaching the first '*' character, every /dev entry still not defined in an earlier line matches this definition, resulting in the sound drivers getting loaded. My definitions for the serial and ppp module are in lines behind this one and thus never reached. Shame on me. :-) Ingo
