I successfully compiled devfs v99.16 into kernel 2.2.16 and running devfsd-v1.3.10. devfs works nicely for me. But I need to run some "expect" scripts in a chroot gaol. The scripts fail to spawn due to unable to allocate ptys. I have read that the multi-mount facility has been removed. Is there any way round my problem if I want to stay with kernel 2.2? Thanks for any > recommendation or pointing out my mistakes. Firstly, multi-mount has not been removed from the 2.2 patch. Secondly, with the multi-mount feature, you need to explicitely mknod(2) devices to make them appear. That is how you tell devfs which devices you want to expose (when mounting with the "explicit" option). You can use devfsd to automate this for you. Capture the LOOKUP event and issue a mknod(2). The system is Linux 2.4.0-test9, glibc 2.1.1, util-linux 2.10p. There is no /dev/floppy after I modprobe floppy, and no /dev/ide/fd. There is no /dev/loop after I modeprobe loop. I have two SCSI adapters, and use lilo to pass the parameters of one of them to the kernel. This is always scsi0. But in clueless hope I have tried giving the kernel "scsihosts=aha152x:aic7xxx" anyway. scsi0:0:0 is a tape drive. scsi0:4:0 is a CD burner. scsi1:0:1:0, scsi1:0:2:0 and scsi1:0:4:0 are hard disk drives. There are no problems with the diskoi (phew). If I try to list /dev/tapes/ the st.o module is loaded and prints a message, but the directory doesn't appear, and the device file doesn't appear under /dev/scsi. There is no /dev/sg directory after I modprobe sg. There is a full directory tree under /dev/scsi/host0, but the lun directories are uninhabited: host0: bus0/ host0/bus0: target0/, target4/ host0/bus0/target0: lun0/ host0/bus0/target0/lun0: host0/bus0/target4: lun0/ host0/bus0/target4/lun0: host1: Also, rlogin and remote printing to birdseye have conked out for some reason. I can't do a remote backup to the tape drive even if I mknod /dev/st0. Is this a coincidence, I'm wondering, or also the work of devfs? I see nothing in the list archive about these problems, and so assume others aren't having them. What am I doing wrong? I forgot to say that in /etc/securetty I couldn't use vc/1 & Co. (couldn't log in as root on those VTs) but tty1 etc. work fine. Will also mention for general amuzement that after reading a thread in the archive I tried (after locating the rescue floppies and doing a few syncs) this: cd /; mv dev dev_new && mv dev_old dev It didn't happen. /dev_new appeared and files were put in it, but /dev stayed and files or some files (or whatever they are) were not deleted. I see dlfcn.h being defined in both /usr/include, and /usr/include/bits with the 2nd being included from the first, and I see a #include at line 192 of devfsd.c (with no #ifdef's in sight). I see __USE_GNU being #undef'ed in features.h, but dont see where this is being included, probably included by someone, but why doesnt #define'ing __USE_GNU AFTER all of the #includes fix this? very strange. It seems to be working as advertised w/ just one problem: sound is not working. There is no /dev/sound directory at all. The system in question is using a Soundblaster LIve! card, which uses the emu10k1.o module. I have not modified any of the devfsd config files. On another system that doesn't use devfs, but has the same exact hardware, the /etc/modules.conf file entry for the sound card looks like this (if it matters): alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1 on the system in question I also added alias /dev/sound emu10k1 which seems like an unusual entry to me, but I think I got it from one of the devfsd config files. DEVFSD seems to compile fine in a RH6.2 based system with 2.4.0-test11, but has the problems I mentioned in an earlier note in a RH7.0 sytem with the same 2.4.0-test11. I guess Ill write this off as just one more problem with RH7.0 and stop waisting my time with it. This is not the FIRST problem Ive had with RH7.0 (sigh). -- Reg.Clemens reg@dwf.com From owner-devfs@oss.sgi.com Thu Nov 30 21:03:24 2000 Received: by oss.sgi.com id ; Thu, 30 Nov 2000 21:03:14 -0800 Received: from orion.dwf.com ([204.134.2.19]:1664 "EHLO orion.dwf.com") by oss.sgi.com with ESMTP id ; Thu, 30 Nov 2000 21:02:54 -0800 Received: from orion.dwf.com (IDENT:reg@localhost.dwf.com [127.0.0.1]) by orion.dwf.com (8.11.0/8.11.0) with ESMTP id eB152gb01163 for ; Thu, 30 Nov 2000 22:02:42 -0700 Message-Id: <200012010502.eB152gb01163@orion.dwf.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.2 06/23/2000 with nmh-1.0.3 To: devfs@oss.sgi.com Subject: 'Nuther Problem: respawning too fast... I have installed devfsd and its two config files. I have the line '/sbin/devfsd /dev' early in rc.sysinit. I boot the kernel with DEVFS enabled. The boot goes along 'ok', with some complaints about /dev/tty0 not existing. It runs thru the rc3.d init files, down thru 'starting linuxconfig' which is the last line in rc3.d, I then see starting linuxconf [ ok ] INIT: Id "1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "3" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "4" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "5" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "6" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes and then things hang for 5 minutes (if you are willing to wait), and we run thru the same messages again.
