There should be a device which corresponds to your real console. In fact, if /dev/console doesn't go to your (serial) console, I'd argue that it's a bug in the console driver. Yes, it's limited filesystem - you can not create regular files there. But you CAN create symlinks, directories, sockets and pipes there just fine. You can play with permissions and such info will be even keept across reboots with properly tuned devfsd. THAT'S by design. Thing like /proc where you can not create file or alter it's permission can not replace old-fashioned /dev for sure. > Have you tried using devfsd to create a symlink from /dev/console to > /dev/ttyS0? You are joking, right ? RIGHT ? How the hell devfsd can do anything with /dev/console before it's even loaded ? Console is created in main.c before PCI and other kernel subsystems are initialized or /sbin/init started. >> >> -tduffy >> >> On Mon, 7 Aug 2000, Khimenko Victor wrote: >> >> > 4-Aug-00 12:59 you wrote: >> > > So, I have been having a problem getting devfs to allow me to make >> > > /dev/console redirected to the serial port. >> > >> > Really ? At least I was not duped his as I know what I'm talking about. It's devfs feature (sometimes unfortunate but still feature): you can not change type of OPENED device - you can remove that device and you can try to create something in place of that device but you'll get the same device with the same minor and major numbers as before. Since /dev/console is created early on boot and used by kernel for the whole system lifetime you can not change /dev/console. You can redirect /dev/console to serial port without /dev/console recreation though so it's not a big problem usually. I have installed the patch, recompiled, etc. from information in the FAQ and my system didn't want to boot at all after that. The system is a RedHat6.1 (which I have upgraded glibc to 2.1.3 per FAQ). The problem was with the /dev/md?? device drivers. I have 9 mirrors, and for each and every one of them, the raidstart command said "illegal argument". Is there an easy way to fix this problem so I can boot up and give things a shot? I also noticed that in my /dev/scsi/....../part?? there were only 16 of them. You're not running devfsd, are you? You need this for the compatibility names. Either that or edit your /etc/raidtab file. > I also noticed that in my /dev/scsi/....../part?? there were only 16 > of them. Is devfs still limited to the number of partitions I can > have on my drive? Devfs allows drivers to overcome limitations imposed by the device numbering scheme. Someone has to put in the work to update the Linux SCSI and block device layers to make use of this. Until this, the existing limitations remain. There is talk about doing this in 2.5. BTW: I'm still on holidays. Nobody expect a quick response :-) Regards, Richard.... I think such a document might be in order. Yes, I _am_ volunteering to write it. But I can't do it alone. I'm going to need the help of you experienced people on the list. The topics that I think such a howto should/would cover are as follows: 1) Devfs/devfsd installation on a 2.4.0 series kernel. 2) Migration completely to devfs, so as to be able to remove the compatibility entries. I would probably leave the scope at 2.4.0, as it's looking like it will go stable before the end of this year. So, I'd like input, suggestions, and nice tidbits of info to incorporate into this howto. I will be going into college in under a week, I am assuming I will still have some free time to work on a howto. Thus, if there is no sign of the RTC driver in dmesg output, the driver isn't installed, or someone has broken it or something it depends on. Either way, it's not a devfs problem. > Has anyone had trouble with rtc and devfs? No problems here. FYI: I'm still on holidays. It may be some days before this email is flushed from my mqueue.
