Sounds good. We are using lcrash on development hosts, currently
SunOS 5.8. So embedding uncompressor is a reasonable solution.
In fact, I was thinking something like:

        if (magic_number("Kerntypes") == ZIP)
                fp = popen("gunzip Kerntypes", "r");
        else if (magic_number("Kerntypes") == ELF)
                fp = fopen("Kerntypes", "r");
        else
                boom();
