eMMC Eats into SD Cards' Market Share - Global Strategic Business Report 2015

ollowing its launch in the year 2008, eMMC has quickly gained acceptance as a preferred flash storage type in portable consumer electronics. Capable of providing ultra-fast memory, the use of eMMC is widespread in mobile computing devices such as smartphones, tablets, navigation/GPS devices, digital book readers, digital cameras, and portable terminals among others. The eMMC format has added new dimensions to the basic function of mass storage, and the current version eMMC 5.1 comes with several innovative features such as upto 400 Mb/s data transfer rates, enhanced strobe and command queuing to augment the already established image of eMMC in its end-use verticals. Apart from its traditional use as an embedded storage solution in mobile devices, the technology is being explored for prospective applications in place of low density memory storage in digital cameras, camcorders, digital set-top-boxes, televisions and automotive applications.

Encouraging R&D investments in embedded memory storage solutions is expected to boost the competitiveness of the market by creating a rich pipeline of embedded memory solutions geared to meet the needs of even the most advanced mobile platform. Developers of embedded memory storage solutions will place increasing emphasis on enhancing not just memory densities of eMMC, but also on improving read/write speed, data security and hardware self-monitoring features. Embedded Multi-Chip Package (eMCP) features the ability to meet the highly integrated memory needs of modern miniaturized mobile computing devices. A key advantage of the eMCP memory architecture includes space conservation as it allows vertical stacking of multiple memory functions. eMCP also eliminates the need for a separate memory expansion slot thus enabling the development of smaller and thinner devices. eMMC, in eMCP architecture, is forecast to witness widespread adoption in low-end smartphones in the coming years, as the technology moves up the value chain resulting in falling prices and enhanced performance and functionality.

While the eMMC system delivers on most fronts, the need for enhanced security in mobile devices has driven the development of Universal Flash Storage (UFS). The UFS technology is expected to offer enhanced security for mobile devices at par with traditional personal computer systems. The UFS technology is projected to find applications in high end media tablets, ultrabooks and premium smartphones segments of the market, thereby eating into the market share of the eMMC storage system. Issues currently associated with UFS such as high energy consumption, high price and lack of backward compatibility with UFS 1.1 are poised to hamper the prospects for this memory technology in the immediate future.

As stated by the new market research report on Embedded Multimedia Card (eMMC), Asia-Pacific represents the largest as well as the fastest growing regional market with a projected CAGR of 11.9% over the analysis period. The growth in the region is led by strong economic growth, rising income levels, continuous development of cellular markets, rising 3G penetration, and spiraling sales of smartphones and tablets.

Key players covered in the report include Greenliant Systems Ltd., Kingston Technology Corporation, Micron Technology Inc., Phison Electronics Corporation, Samsung Electronics, SanDisk Corporation, Silicon Motion Technology Corp., SK Hynix Inc., and Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc., among others.
