Flash Storage in Datacenters 2015 With the explosion in data content, the use of data has transitioned from simply recording transactions to using it to make important decisions and gain new insights for competitive advantage. As a result, storage has to become faster, cheaper and more scalable. Hard disk drives have been the primary workhorse for a wide range of storage applications including mission critical drives for high performance to capacity drives for bulk storage. However, the relentless cost declines of NAND flash memory have catapulted NAND flash-based solid state storage into becoming the solution of choice in performance-critical applications.
Recently, the rapid growth in enterprise flash storage can be attributed to increasing demand from hyperscale datacenters as managed by Amazon, Facebook, Google and Microsoft. These companies have a deep understanding of their workload environment and the sheer scale of their operations have enabled them to economically adjust their architectures to suit their requirements. Consequently, hyperscale dataceners have been at the forefront of adopting the latest flash technologies in the enterprise. Thus very large scale datacenters account for a disproportionately high percentage of the enterprise demand for solid state drives.
