SLES9 SP1 has kdb v4.4 which uses <escape>KDB as the entry sequence.
It works fine for me on an ia64 box.

Remember that you must have a user program reading from the serial port
in order for the kernel to read anything over the serial line.  IOW,
you must be running getty or equvalent on the serial line.  This is an
annoying kernel restriction, if there is no user space program reading
from the serial port then the kernel ignores all serial input.
