Problem with libFL as non-root

Hello,

I am trying to build libInventor.so as non-root on
an AMD athlon running redhat linux 9.0.  I am not
setting FREETYPE to 1 and am getting the complaint

undefined reference to `__ctype_b'.

If I set FREETYPE to 1 I get the complaint in libInventorXt.so:
undefined reference to `XmeDrawShadows'

Are there ways for non-priveleged users to compile these
libraries?  Any suggestions will be appreciated.
