Yes, it has been done. If you check the list archives, you will see that
partly because Motif source is easily available, there was a bug fixed in it.

That should not be a problem if building Inventor from source.
You can work your way around this by creating a soft link from the Motif
libXm.so to the Lesstif one.

Actually, it is easy, and they do.
Just set your LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point at which ever one you want, and if you
wish, you can also set the directory order to search in your /etc/ld.so.conf
I use the same tricks when switching versions of Motif from 1.2 <-> 2.1 and
versions of OpenGL/Mesa.
