I had the same with my SoFree Inventor clone and Mesa.

For me it came from the fact that I had two Mesa
versions installed and that I had a mess between
the one put in the include path and the one
 in the link, load path.
In fact there is now (RedHat 6.2) a Mesa
under /usr/X11R6/lib, and you think perhaps
that you use another one (a more recent version)
 somewhere else.
I solved the problem by compelling everywhere
Mesa includes (the one I want, not the one
under /usr/X11R6/lib) to be before -I/usr/X11R6/include.

  Hope it could help.

   Regards

     Guy
