libFL_i386.a and gcc3

I am having trouble compiling the
inventor libraries from inventor-2.1.5-10.tar and
am trying to identify the problem.

Does anyone know of difficulties in using
libFL_i386.a (the default font library) and the
gcc3 compiler?
libFL_i386.a was apparently compiled with
gcc 2.96 on redhat linux 7.1 while I am using
gcc 3.2.2 on redhat linux 9.0.
