I don't think it's been discussed yet...

Inventor uses the X Input Extension for reading the spaceball.  I think
there used to be support for the spaceball in the XFree-3.3 days, but I
don't think it has been maintained because I believe it has been surpassed
by the linux kernel input device code.  I pretty sure they have
support for the 4000flx, but I don't think the older ones are supported.  
Take a quick look in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/input/joystick.txt
