You can build FAM on Solaris in a platform independent way as soon as 
FAM do not use file/dirs kernel monitoring and do it on its own. I built 
a FAM 2.9 (2 years ago) using it for solaris 2.8.

Fam is monitoring file/dirs by active scan. It is not the optimal way of 
running, but at least it enables you to go on building gnome.
