using fam to monitor login/logoff

Hi,

I am not very familiar with Linux.  For this project I was working on, I
wanted to monitor when people login and logoff from a Linux machine (not
remotely).  Some people suggested that I shuld use FAM to monitor
/dev/console and "trigger an action based on a changed to this file".
However, the action I want to trigger is to send out a simple digital
output (toggel between 1 and 0) to a parallel port (that will be connected
to a breadboard or an Altera board).
I was wondering if this is possible with FAM.
