[fam] fam limitations

hi:
        could someone please tell me what the key drawbacks of using 
fam are ? (I believe fam does not allow a single process to monitor more 
than 1,000 files/directories)
        also what are alternative programs that can be used in place of 
fam ? and how does fam compare to them ?
