Hey... I've used the dmedia stuff on IRIX to develop things, this is
what I have installed:
hameluck@isildur:~[201]% showprods dmedia_dev
I = Installed, R = Removed
Name Date Description
I dmedia_dev 10/10/2000 Digital Media Development
Environment,
6.5.8m
This "cross platform" dmsdk isn't quite the same, all sorts of changes
have taken place in types and file naming, etc... which is fine.
but I'm confused by various statements in the press releases, etc... and
the actual dmsdk that can be downloaded.
In the overview:
http://oss.sgi.com/projects/dmsdk/index.html
The first release of the dmSDK (version 1.0) was for the SGI 320 and 540
Windows NT ® Visual Workstations. The second release (version 2.0)
currently supports IRIX ® and Linux ® workstations.
In the press release:
http://www.sgi.com/newsroom/press_releases/2001/january/dmsdk.html
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (January 4, 2001)-SGI (NYSE: SGI), a leading
provider of solutions for the digital media industry, today announced
that the source code for its digital media software development kit
(dmSDK) for the Linux® operating environment is now available to the
open source community. The dmSDK toolkit shortens the time required to
create digital media applications across the SGITM product line by
allowing SGI software partners to write to a single application
programming interface (API). The dmSDK source code is now available for
download from SGI's open source developer Web site at
http://www.sgi.com/developers/oss/.
dmSDK provides Linux developers with a proven, cross-platform digital
media API and is a key enabler allowing digital media developers to
deliver applications for this increasing popular operating system. The
cross-platform capability of dmSDK creates an easy bridge for current
SGI developers wanting to leverage their IRIX® operating system software
development to bring Linux products to market quickly.
But sadly in the FAQ:
Q: What platforms are supported?
In its current release, the dmSDK open source builds on Red Hat 6.2
Linux with SGI ProPack 1.3-VW.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, my question is... how do I get this dmSDK on IRIX? Is it not quite
avilable and the press release and overview are just hype and it's only
on Linux for the time being? If so, what's the timeframe for IRIX? Or
is it already an SGI product that we can install but it's not the
dmedia_dev package? The tarball definitely doesn't want to compile on
IRIX out of the box as the FAQ says.
And as an aside... anyone reading this involved in Open Source at SGI
know if SGI has ever given any thought to releasing IFL (The Image
Format Library) Open Source? Not Image Vision (the image processing
thing), just IFL (to read and write various image formats). We've
ridden SGIs produt strategy and I've used IFL for our stuff under IRIX
and under NT and now that SGI's jumped over to Linux (as we have) I felt
a little boned because the same effort SGI put into porting/building
SDKs for their big NT push wasn't put into porting libraries like IFL to
Linux even though they'd be dead simple compared to porting to NT.
We've brought it up to our sales rep here but being in New Zealand, it
seemed to fall on deaf ears. IFL on Linux! It'd be a good thing!
