  I recall solving this problem, some time ago, my making
  minor changes to the mingetty code.  In the end, I gave 
  up using mingetty, as I have to confess that I was not 
  certain that my fix was valid and that it would stand
  the test of time.

  I should be able to locate the patch, if it is important.
