just a question of time : rc.sysinit has the time to do a few things
before devfsd and minilogd clashes.
aurora helps to debug: take a slow box with few memory, enable aurora,
and you'll see it.
with pixel, we've altered all /etc/rc.d/ stuff to use /bin/bash -x,
run devfsd in debug mode on another console to find the problem source.
