That's a frustrating discovery! I have via, intel, and crystal sound
chips in the machines in my lab, and they all suffer the distortion
you mention when a non-master setting exceeds 90%.

It works when I use alsa without devfs, but does not work when I use
alsa with devfs. /dev/sound/dsp and friends are not created until I
run gmix or kmix.
