I forgot to say that in /etc/securetty I couldn't use vc/1 &
Co. (couldn't log in as root on those VTs) but tty1 etc. work fine.

Will also mention for general amuzement that after reading a thread in
the archive I tried (after locating the rescue floppies and doing
a few syncs) this:

cd /; mv dev dev_new && mv dev_old dev

It didn't happen. /dev_new appeared and files were put in it, but
/dev stayed and files or some files (or whatever they are) were not
deleted. I only mention it because there are probably some on this
earth who have never seen:

chameleon:/# tty
/dev/vc/2 (deleted)
