I suggest may not be possible)

What about breaking up the patch into smaller chunks so that at least some
parts make it into the main branch?  Has anything been accepted at all to
the main tree?

At the very least, getting things like the 64-bit compatibility patches
would be useful.

I've attempted to contribute simple patches to other Apache projects in the
past (Tomcat), and found it very difficult to make any progress even when
submitting obviously correct patches.  No-one would apply the patches!  It
really requires you to get the attention a committer in the group, and only
then can you make some progress.  It seems that there is much politics and
in-fighting going on in the various Apache developer groups which is
unfortunate and scares developers away.
